Walked Up Grouse Shooting

August the 12th – often referred to as the ‘Glorious Twelfth’ – marks the start of the Grouse Shooting season in Scotland. Steeped in the rich annals of sporting tradition, the thrill of a walking amongst heather clad moors in pursuit of the king of game birds, is an adrenaline filled experience which captures the very essence of Scotland’s outstanding natural beauty.

The camaraderie, breath taking scenery and heart-stopping flushes of red grouse, make this a bucket list adventure to rival any.

Walked-up Grouse shooting will test both your physical fitness and skill as a marksman. For your own comfort and safety, a good level of hill walking fitness and previous walked-up shooting experience are both highly recommended. Sturdy hiking boots and waterproof clothing are also essential.

For those with less experience, expert tuition is available at the Gleneagles Shooting School and is strongly recommended prior to your day on the hill.

Due to the high demand for walked up grouse shooting, we recommend booking at least 6 months in advance.

Roe Deer Stalking

The roe deer is a relatively small but beautiful deer, with rather short, erect antlers and a reddish body with a grey face. Its hide is rich, golden red in summer, darkening to brown or even black in winter.

Roe deer bucks are normally found in good quality farmland surrounded by mixed woodland, where they hide out for most of the day.

Best stalking times are at first light with dawn breaking and the dew still on the grass – or in an evening outing where fading light is your greatest challenge.

The Roe Buck season runs from 1 April to 20 October.

Red Deer Stalking

A stag on a moor

Red deer stags can be stalked from 1 July through to 20 October, with the prime time for stags from the 20th of September onwards. Red deer hinds can be stalked from 21 October to 15 February.

EXTRA DETAILS

Red Deer stalking requires participants to spend the best part of the day outdoors and moving over rough terrain; being reasonably fit, wearing sturdy boots and weather-proof clothing will help you make the most of a memorable day.

Guests are advised to wear clothing which blends in with the landscape, whilst offering protection from rough ground. Clothing needs to be tough and hardwearing as guests can end up crawling over some rocky terrain. Waterproof as well as breathable are also key. A jacket with a hood to keep the rain off is an advantage and a hat is a necessity. If you’re a traditionalist there’s nothing like a tweed deer stalker.

Red deer stalking requires a stout pair of hiking boots which offer good ankle support.
If you’re wearing breeks (plus twos or fours) then you’ll need gaiters over your socks to protect your legs from ticks. Please don’t wear wellies as they don’t offer sufficient ankle protection.

The roe deer is a relatively small but beautiful deer, with rather short, erect antlers and a reddish body with a grey face. Its hide is rich, golden red in summer, darkening to brown or even black in winter.

Roe deer bucks are normally found in good quality farmland surrounded by mixed woodland, where they hide out for most of the day.

Best stalking times are at first light with dawn breaking and the dew still on the grass – or in an evening outing where fading light is your greatest challenge.

The Roe Buck season runs from 1 April to 20 October.

A stag on a moor

Red deer stags can be stalked from 1 July through to 20 October, with the prime time for stags from the 20th of September onwards. Red deer hinds can be stalked from 21 October to 15 February.

Red Deer stalking requires participants to spend the best part of the day outdoors and moving over rough terrain; being reasonably fit, wearing sturdy boots and weather-proof clothing will help you make the most of a memorable day.

Guests are advised to wear clothing which blends in with the landscape, whilst offering protection from rough ground. Clothing needs to be tough and hardwearing as guests can end up crawling over some rocky terrain. Waterproof as well as breathable are also key. A jacket with a hood to keep the rain off is an advantage and a hat is a necessity. If you’re a traditionalist there’s nothing like a tweed deer stalker.

Red deer stalking requires a stout pair of hiking boots which offer good ankle support.
If you’re wearing breeks (plus twos or fours) then you’ll need gaiters over your socks to protect your legs from ticks. Please don’t wear wellies as they don’t offer sufficient ankle protection.
