Team Members & Culture
To ensure that the environmental journey continues at the necessary speed – and this is certainly one journey that does not have any speed limit attached to it. It is essential that our team members understand fully what we are aiming to achieve.
There has been a conscious decision that not one person will have this as a responsibility – we do not have an environmental manager – it is everyone's responsibility and something that is incorporated in the annual performance review. Instead the business has looked at facilitators to direct the business:
Executive involvement
To ensure that we achieve this goal we require full support and involvement from the executive team. This involves monthly walk rounds and taking the lead in what is happening. They will challenge and question the way we do things resulting in new ideas being brought to the table.
Waste watchers
As well as communicating all our progress within monthly Operations meetings, Gleneagles also handpicked a group of environmentally enthusiastic team members from various departments throughout the resort to create what is known as a ‘Waste Watcher’ team. The role of this team is to help deliver the environmental message around the resort and come up with useful ideas and initiatives to assist Gleneagles in remaining as green as possible. Waste watchers are very much an integral part of the environmental decision making process and implementation and they will champion any initiatives which are likely to further improve our green development.
Induction
It is believed to be such an integral and important part of our business that all new team members are introduced to environmental processes during the first two days within the resort.
Visual impact
To keep the environmental part of our business at the forefront of everyone’s mind we have ‘planted’ a tree within the main service corridor (painted onto the wall). Every time that we have an achievement for the environment a new leaf is attached with date and the achievement. This assists with the tracking and helps keep everyone informed and up to date with progress yet maintaining that ‘fun’ image that should be associated with embedding a culture. The greener that Gleneagles get the greener the tree.
Perthshire Big Tree Country
Any funds raised by team members throughout the year are donated in support of the Perthshire Big Tree Country. It is believed that if the team members are involved, they then quickly become a part of the overall implementation and customer focus on this project.
