Energy Management
Gleneagles aims to become a carbon neutral hotel based on its energy utility usage (Electricity, LPG, Fuel Oil, Diesel and Petrol).
Work on energy management at Gleneagles has been on going for a number of years. Measures such as reducing the wattage of light bulbs and having motion detectors fitted all make a difference.
However, 2007 saw a massive leap forward with the installation of a Biomass Boiler in conjunction with Buccleuch Bioenergy Limited. The boiler has dramatically lowered carbon emissions and has proved a cost saving initiative for the resort. The Biomass Bolier has produced 88% of the heating and domestic hot water for the hotel from the period of September 2009 to date.
Our energy management focus also extends to water, with irrigation systems on the three championship golf courses assisting with effective turf management.
Key Fact – What does being a “carbon neutral hotel” mean?Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gasses, produced by the burning of fossil fuels for heating and electricity. Being “carbon neutral” entails reducing and/or avoiding carbon emissions (in LPG, Fuel Oil, Diesel and Petrol), and offsetting any unavoidable emissions by planting trees, for example. The aim is to achieve a balance between the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere, by producing the same amount of renewable energy to compensate for this. |
