Threading its way through the high ridges to the north and west of the estate, The Queen’s Course hides its challenges behind some truly stunning scenery. It has attracted Ballesteros, Norman and Watson (to say nothing of Connery, Crosby and Lancaster) and is a course that’s easy to fall in love with.

Virtual Course Guide

At little over 3,000 yards long, the front nine of the Queen’s Course seems an easy introduction to your round. Don’t be fooled. Let’s discover a little more shall we?

Tryst meaning meeting or rendezvous is usually used in a romantic sense.

1. Trystin' Tree

To reach the eye of this needle you must thread your way carefully.

2. Needle E'e

The name means gushing or running water in a ploughman’s rig or furrow.

3. Gushet Rig

The hill of the warlock or male witch.

4. Warlock Knowe

Glower O’er ’em or frown upon them is a fair description of how a player might regard the bunkers in this hole.

5. Glower O'er 'em

Sight of the Hills. The holes around this point on the course give fine views to the west.

6. Drum Sichty

This hole is in fact the farthest from the start on the Queen’s Course.

7. Westlin' Wyne

The old fold or sheep pen. One can imagine a sheep pen nestling in the sheltered hollow where the green lies.

8. Auld Faul

A Stey Brae is a steep hill and in a well-known Scots proverb it requires a stout heart to overcome it.

9. Stey Brae

A stoup is a jug or flagon containing one Scots pint.

10. Pint Stoup

The top of the moor.

11. Muir Tap

The tinker’s drink.

12. Tinker's Gill

A water kelpie is a water sprite. Try not to be trapped by the spell of Loch-an Eerie!

13. Water Kelpie

Witches’ bowster or pillow, perhaps a reference to the pillow-like ridge formed on the two-tier green.

14. Witches' Bowster

The lady’s own.

15. Leddy's Ain

Before the course was built this particular area is said to have been a favourite with the local courting couples.

16. Lovers' Gait

This name has several meanings. It may mean honeymoon, half moon, honey or sweetness.

17. Hinny Mune

Queen’s home and a fine end to the round.
