Clarsach: Price range: £200 to £275
Smaller than a concert harp and less sonorous. Some Clarsach players also sing. Gives a fresh, youthful, 'Scottish' feel. Suitable for background music for smallish number of diners (possibly too small for the larger drinks reception). Limited (Scottish) repertoire.Listen to audio clip (240KB MP3)
Harp: Price range: £200 to £275
More resonant than a clarsach and offers wider repertoire. Duo with flute (and trio with flute/viola) a good combination. Suitable for more intimate receptions. i.e. will not fill 200 seat dining room.
Piano: Price range: £200 to £330
Piano solo is the tried and tested background instrument as it covers a vast repertoire from the classics through light jazz, themes from TV and the shows to the latest hits. Most players will take 'requests'
DUOS
Clarsach with singer/whistle/violin: Price range: £300 to £370
Adds a bit of extra interest by offering a greater variety of texture as well as widening the repertoire.
Harp with singer/flute: Price range: £340 to £400
As above, broadens the range of appeal.
Piano with violin & cello: Price range: £370 to £750
Try adding a violin to give that extra singing line and a greater variety of textures; and a cello to add a rich bass and give the 'palm court' feel.
Guitar duo (two guitars)-(plus trumpet): Price range: £500 to £750
More unusual combination, which allows the players to play 'off' each other. Can cover repertoire from light jazz to flamenco.
String quartet: Price range: £675 to £1,700
Can add a stylish, sumptuous feel to the occasion, playing elegant Mozart and Haydn in black tie to Pink Floyd in sexy outfits. Anything is possible!
